A LOOK AT OUR PAST

The GAP Community Organization dates to 1978 when members of the Christ the Mediator Lutheran Church formed the Christ the Mediator Lutheran Church Housing Group. The group had the will to begin the rebirth of an aging neighborhood. The GAP Community Organization by-laws were eventually adopted by the membership on February 2, 1983.Inside the GAP includes the Calumet/Giles/Prairie Landmark district. The area was designated a landmark district on July 13, 1988. The GAP has one of the few surviving collections of rowhouses on the South Side, dating from the late-19th and early-20th centuries. The housing stock includes early works by Louis H. Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright (Roloson House). The neighborhood is often referred to as the "GAP," due to its survival in the midst of other areas that had been cleared for redevelopment in the 1960s. In recent years, the area has undergone substantial rehabilitation, including construction of many new "infill" residences.
